Canon's new Selphy compact photo printer can act voices instructions

Canon has introduced the US$150 Selphy ES40 Compact Photo Printer, which joins the ranks with last year's CP760 and 770 in the company's line of portable, compact photo printers.

These devices are designed to be the home version of the popular walk-up photo kiosk, with high-quality photos at the touch of a button. Like several others in the Selphy line, the ES40 boasts a large 3.5-inch LCD screen and the Easy-Scroll Wheel for quick navigation and basic photo and color editing.

As a testament to Canon's innovation, the ES40 even includes a voice guidance system that vocalizes step-by-step instructions to help you print and even lay graphics over your photos without the use of a manual.

Epson's portable photo printer with digital frame

In Japan, it's a tradition to send out postcards for New Year on January 1, and most families like to make their own to send out to friends and relatives. Epson Japan probably saw a potential in this market and introduced the Colorio Me E-800 postcard printer.

However, this portable gadget comes with a nice 7-inch LCD which doubles as a digital photo frame when it is not churning out greeting cards. Another interesting feature of the E-800 is that it is bundled a remote control as well as a wireless keyboard. This can be used for typing out customized messages on pictures. The inkbox has an onboard card reader which accepts commonly used media such as Memory Stick and SD/SDHC. Users can also transfer images to the E-800 from their mobile phones via the optional Bluetooth adapter.

The E-800 is currently available only in Japan and is retailing for about US$600. Epson Singapore told CNET Asia the company has intentions to bring a similar product soon to Asia, though it may not be able to create customized postcards like the E-800 and will probably print photographs only. Pricing-wise, consumers can expect it to be more affordable than the E-800. Check back soon for more updates.

Just in time for the holiday gift-buying rush, Epson on Tuesday announced a brand new PictureMate personal photo printer. We've reviewed plenty of Epson's 4 x 6-inch photo printers in the past, but its latest PictureMate Charm promises maximum versatility and print durability for just US$150.

The PictureMate Charm gives home photo enthusiasts a new way to produce lab-quality photos on the go at parties, special events, family vacations, and so on, thanks to the inclusion of a carrying handle and a dual-purpose lid that also happens to double as a paper input tray.

Creative types will be pleased to see a variety of color effects and layout options that turn photos into wallet-size proof sheets, stickers, and more. Featuring 5760 x 1440 dpi, the PictureMate Charm boasts the highest print resolution in its class with built-in auto photo correction and red-eye removal in tow. The Charm will also come with ink and 100 sheets of either glossy or matte-finish 4 x 6-inch photo paper.

HP introduced Plug & Print technology

HP lifted the curtain on three new laser jet printers for small businesses, the first batch of HP devices to include the company's new "Smart Install" feature that eliminates the need for a separate driver installation CD. The HP team showed me this technology in a briefing last month. It streamlines the installation process down to one simple step: Just plug a USB cable into the host computer and you're done--all the drivers you need to establish a connection are embedded within the printer's memory bank so there's no need for external media. Check out this video of the HP Smart Install in action.

In the mid-1990s, a Minneapolis-based company called Stratasys introduced the first 3D printer model, co-developed with IBM. Since then, 2D designers across the world rely on 3D printers to bring their CAD (computer aided design) mockups to life. As one of the earliest pioneers in the field, Stratasys has now teamed up with HP to manufacture the HP Designjet 3D printer series, the first relatively affordable 3D printer made by a major 2D printing company.

Designing a product on paper and turning it into a physical three-dimensional plastic model relies on a patented process Stratasys calls "Fused Deposition Modeling technology", which creates the product layer by layer using thin slabs of semi-molten plastic.

HP's Web-connected printers

Internet Week commenced Monday morning in New York City with a keynote speech from HP's Vyomesh Joshi about the next evolution of Web-connected printing. HP's solution takes advantage of cloud-based data transfers and lets users send documents and pictures from any email device to any one of HP's newest Web-connected "ePrinters."

HP first introduced the idea of Web-connected printing last year with its flagship all-in-one, the HP Photosmart Touchsmart Web. Now HP has plans to integrate its "print anywhere" plan across its OfficeJet, PhotoSmart, LaserJet, and OfficeJet divisions, and each printer will ship with an assigned email address that you can use to print directly from any smartphone or Web-connected system; you can even store your collaborative projects in the cloud for worldwide printing access.

At Internet Week 2010 last week, Hewlett-Packard announced a new line of Web-connected printers that enable users to access their data through the cloud and print Web content from any device using an assigned email address.

The service does away with printer drivers and even has a new scheduling feature that allows for timed delivery of content from news outlets like Yahoo and MSNBC, but there's a catch. Yahoo this week announced a pilot program with HP that will also provide users with localized, targeted ads to go along with the new printing interface.

Since the new printers need access to an Internet router to glean content, the associated IP addresses will be used by Yahoo's advertising network to gain valuable user information for delivering more relevant advertisements for frequent users. There's also talk of targeted ads based on user activity, which raises all sorts of new questions about online privacy.

In reference to early customer feedback on printer-based advertisements, ComputerWorld reported that Stephen Nigro, senior vice president of HP's Imaging and Printing Group, said: "Part of our belief is you're used to it. You're used to seeing things with ads."

New Web-enabled printers of HP's ePrint-series

Following last week's Apple AirPrint announcement, today HP introduces three new printers featuring HP's ePrint technology that lets you print any document or picture from the Web using the unique email address assigned to it.

Each printer takes drastic leaps away from previous consumer models inside and out, but each has the capability to connect to the Web through one-touch print apps for maps, movies, tickets, coupons, coloring books, and so on--as we first saw on last year's HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web.

Latest Canon Printer

The Japanese company's latest range of Pixma printers hold claim to what its general manager Andrew Koh describes as "the most beautiful printers made by Canon". Clad in a glossy black chassis, the Pixma MG6170 and MG8170 are the firm's latest flagship All-In-One (AIO) offerings.

Other than stylish designs, the two inkboxes also feature an Intelligent Touch System which does away with physical keys. In place are touch-sensitive controls which just require a tap to activate. Additionally, only specific keys are lit when in certain functions, which aims to help minimize confusion when operating the printers.

Canon has also introduced two new functions for its inkboxes. There is the Flickr Integration Photo Print, which allows users to import their own pictures on photo-sharing site Flickr to be printed easily. The HD movie clip printing feature lets consumers open a high-definition movie file on their computer and select an individual frame from there to be printed as a photo. However, this function is only limited to video files generated from a Canon camera.

The MG6170 and MG8170 are joined by five other AIOs: The Pixma MG5270, MG5170, MP497, MP287 and iP4870. These five models have HD movie printing and Flickr-integrated printing, but no touch-operated control panel.

The MP497 is on sale now for S$299 (US$230.73) in Asia. The other six inkboxes will be in stores from end September, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
